Lego experts put together a functioning manual gearbox

Did you or your kids want a really simple demonstration of the working principle behind the manual transmission? Then look no longer this video by Lego Brick Technology.

The footage shows how easy it is to put together a simple two-range gearbox powered by an electric motor and then expand it to five gears, including reverse.

Assembling a switch mechanism proved more of a challenge and necessitated adding more parts to the project. The LEGO bricks originally used for the build resulted in a very loose gearbox that struggled to switch quickly and reliably. The end design proved much tighter when assembled.
