BYD announces first EVs with solid-state batteries

Aside from being a leading manufacturer of electric vehicles, Chinese BYD Group also plays a major role in traction battery R&D.

According to Sun Huajun, the leader of the company’s power cell branch, the first EVs powered by solid-state batteries are just a couple of years away from us. The cells they use rely on an innovative sulfide electrolyte to output energy.

He did admit that these cars would be low-volume, expensive vehicles aimed at early adopters of the tech. The company remains positive that it can have the technology fully figured out by the end of the decade, bringing the costs down until they are on par with the current-gen battery packs.
