Mazda slightly revamps the CX-9 for 2020

The USA version of the Mazda CX-9 SUV has received a light brushing-up for the next model year.

The changes are so few and far between, even calling it a ‘mid-generational refresh’ would be a stretch. That said, some things are worth noting. For one, the car’s zero-option 2.5-liter turbo-four engine raised its maximum torque from 420 to 434 Nm (310 -> 320 pound-feet) – but that’s only as long as you pour in the 98-octane gasoline and not the ON 92 most people use. In fact, you could lift its power output from 230 to 254 horsepower (172 -> 188 kW) much in the same way, all along.

The options list now includes a feature called Off-road Traction Assist, which simulates differential locking to improve off-road performance. You can also now swing open the trunk door by swinging your leg up (…yeah). Touring Premium and Grand Touring trims offer two individual back seats as a paid option, and the all-boxes-ticked Signature trim has these by default.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 will launch in the USA before the November ends. Despite the small scope of novelty, it will come with quite a price bump compared to its predecessor. For instance, the basic Sport version is now $33,790 (up from $32,280), and the Signature is a whopping $46,115 (up from $45,365). Other markets will receive the same facelift later.
