Reuters: BYD sells its EVs at 2x the price in Europe compared to China

BYD electric vehicle premiums for the export markets range from 81% to 174% for certain models, Reuters has concluded upon analyzing the offerings of authorized dealerships in Europe.

For example, the compact BYD Atto 3 crossover can be obtained in China for the approximate equivalent of U.S. $19,300. In Germany, the same car costs an outrageous $42,800. The Dolphin EV costs $16,500 at home and $37,500 in Germany (comparing two different but similar trim versions, as there is no exact match).

This isn’t all. On its primary export markets of Germany, Israel and Brazil, the Dolphin comes with premiums ranging from 39% to 178%. The BYD Seal is between 30% and 136% more expensive on these markets compared to China.

Reuters analysts suppose that keeping prices artificially high on low-competition foreign markets enables the Chinese automotive corporation to keep waging price wars on its domestic market. They also point out that there selling cars abroad at a hefty premium is a well-established international practice not unique to BYD. On the other hand, it’ still rare to see such extreme price bumps across the range.
