GAC Aion UT touches down in China

GAC has unveiled a new electric vehicle under its Aion sub-brand. It is a compact hatchback called the UT.

On the outside, the newcomer features a sleek aerodynamic body with a sloped roof culminating in a large spoiler at the back, low-drag wheels coming in 16 and 17 inches, and LED lighting all around. There are quad-section anti-fog lights built straight into the front bumper and C-shaped taillights. The pillars are offset in black, creating the illusion of a floating roof.

Inside, the dashboard is laconic and has no physical buttons whatsoever. There is a modest-sized dash display, a much larger infotainment screen, and a two-spoke steering wheel with a transmission selector on the column. The center console houses a pair of cupholders and two wireless charging pads.

The Aion UT is sized 4,270 mm (166.8 inches) long, 1,850 mm (72.3 in) wide and 1,575 mm (61.5 in) tall with 2,750 mm (107.4 in) between the axles. The company says its curb weight lies between 1,510 and 1,540 kilos (3,330–3,395 lbs) depending on the trim.

A single electric motor powered by a LiFePo4 battery pack drives the wheels with 136 PS (134 hp / 100 kW).

The Aion UT is the Chinese marque’s third production car that’s targeting the global market (after the Aion V SUV and the Aion RT sedan).
