RWD Mazda 6 with inline-six shelved

Did you get your hopes up when Mazda said it was considering releasing a Six with the drive on the rear-wheels and an inline six-cylinder engine? Get them back down, it isn’t happening.

If you recall the phrasing, the automaker said needed enough customer interest to commit to the production. But as it turned out, the market has so far continued to favor SUVs and crossovers over sedans. As such, there will be no RWD Mazda 6 in the next generation.

The current Mazda EZ-6 (see the gallery and the video) is essentially a rebadged Chinese car running on Chinese platform and tech. Going forward, Mazda says it will only use its own, in-house-designed platform for SUVs.
