Mercedes-Benz GLA lands with polarizing design, up to 354 PS

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third generation of its GLA SUV. While designed for the international market, the new GLA will initially be offered in Europe as an all-electric vehicle, with the ICE powertrains slated for 2027 launch.

In its latest design iteration, Mercedes’ affordable crossover measures 4,470 mm (176 inches) long and 1,590 mm (62.6 inches) tall – 60 mm (2.4 in) longer and 20 mm (0.8 in) shorter than its predecessor. The width and the wheelbase stay broadly the same. Like most other modern Mercedes models, it has tri-point star lights at both ends and a snazzy radiator grille backlit with whopping 180 diodes.

Although the automaker has already admitted that removing traditional buttons for touchscreens was a mistake, the new GLA apparently didn’t get the message. Its interior is very digital-looking with three displays on the dash. There’s a compact gauge cluster, a 14-inch infotainment screen and a 14-inch front passenger’s display (paid option). Contour lighting can be seen all around the car, on the door panels and inside new climate vents.

The most affordable Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 will land in Europe with a single e-motor at the rear axle driving it with 224 PS (221 hp / 165 kW). A more advanced spec known as the 250+ offers 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) from the same powertrain layout, and a dual-motor flagship spec called the GLA 350 4Matic delivers 354 PS (349 hp / 260 kW) to both axles. Ranges vary per configuration, with the longest one quoted at 657 kilometers (408 miles).

Prices in Germany start just under €50,000, but we strongly suggest double-checking what is standard and what is optional in this new GLA. You’d be surprised how much of the car shown in Mercedes ads is optional equipment. Go for the most bare-bones spec, and you’ll be staring at something that barely resembles a premium vehicle – check out the interior pic at the end of the gallery here to get a taste.
