Rumor: AC Cobra to get an entry-level 2.0T spec

AC Cars, the UK automaker currently producing small quantities of its Cobra GT coupes and roadsters, allegedly plans to make the model more affordable in 2025.

The report comes from Autoevolution citing anonymous sources. We are told that the modern interpretation of the legendary AC Cobra will soon be available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That’s quite the downgrade from its traditional 5.0-liter V8, but steps will be taken to ensure it remains a fast car.

According to the sources, the turbo will be available in two versions the more powerful of which will deliver 390 PS (385 hp / 287 kW). Six-speed manual won’t be the only transmission offered, either: we are told that seven-speed DCT will be an option, too. The origin of this new powertrain is unknown at this point, but it allegedly comes from “a world leading manufacturer.”

In order to keep the Cobra GT swift on the track, it will be rebuilt with more carbon-fiber components both in the chassis and the bodywork.

AC Cars hasn’t confirmed the displacement and the parameters of this new engine, but admitted that a smaller-displacement option was in the works. A representative of the company said it wasn’t just done for economy: in many countries, larger engines are subject to high taxes and are harder to clear for public road use.
