BMW has reported a successful conclusion of tests that involved its just-assembled cars driving themselves out of assembly facilities in Dingolfing and Leipzig.
Encouraged by the smooth performance of its latest autonomous driving gimmick, the Bavarian carmaker now wants to implement it at its other assembly sites as well.
The important thing to note here is that the way the system is implemented involves using LiDARs mounted inside and around the facilities. In other words, the car simply follows the instructions issued by an external system. It doesn’t attempt to get around using its own cameras and sensors. The solution may seem odd at first, but it is cheaper than maintaining a staff of human drivers to handle new car deliveries, BMW argues.
