Delicious backdated BMW M5 crops up on sale in Germany

A highly eccentric custom-built BMW is up for grabs on Bring a Trailer in Germany right now, with the bidding at €43,500 and only a day left on the clock.

MKO – the tuner behind the build – clearly aimed at the BMW 3.0 CSL aesthetic with this one. Starting with a normal 2001 BMW E39 M5, it removed its entire bodywork and even cut the chassis in places to ensure that the result looks adequately proportioned for a replica of a ’70s-era classic.

An all-new body was then crafted for the M5 using components from not one, but two BMW E9 models hailing from the same era as the 3.0 CSL. 19-inch Alpina-style wheels rounded off the exterior.

The result is what we usually call a retromod, and it’s quite the looker. It helps that it is 80 mm (3.1 inches) shorter than the donor M5 and 100 mm (3.9 inches) wider in the arches.

A peek under the hood reveals a 4.9-liter V8 tuned to deliver 432 PS (426 hp / 318 kW) via a six-speed manual transmission. KW coilovers in the suspension result in a more modern ride quality than you could realistically expect from the original.

Last but not least, the interior packs Recaro bucket seats with heating and a Pioneer multimedia system. In the 15 years that passed since the build was complete, it has only accumulated around 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles) on the odometer.
