BMW Speedtop prototype laps up the ‘Ring, setting an example for buyers

BMW unveiled its attention-grabbing and beautiful shooting brake called the Speedtop around a year ago (see video). Originally penned as a concept, the market pressure has ultimately forced it to become a limited-production car for the wealthy among us. It’s now been sighted on the Nürburgring, so let’s zoom in.

Despite the near-complete camo wrap, these spy shots from Carscoops leave very little to the imagination. It’s already clear that the Speedtop hasn’t changed much at all from its conceptual form, retaining the same rear spoiler, narrow-slit lighting units all around and a clean, geometric radiator grille. We can surely understand the automaker not wanting to change much in a concept that the fans loved from the start.

No tech details have been revealed so far. Even so, there are multiple indications to the fact that the Speedtop may be a revived BMW M8 Competition in disguise. If confirmed as true, it’ll mean a 4.4-liter V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The latest M8 Comp was good for 625 PS (616 hp / 460 kW), and we expect no less from its shooting-brake reincarnation.

The sales are penciled in for 2027. Only 70 units will be made, with prices rumored to be close to €500,000.
