Here’s a 68-year-old Chevy Bel Air that became a 650-PS diesel supercar

American Legends Hot Rods and Muscle Cars is selling a unique example of true automotive art: the Hellair, a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air restored, modernized and outfitted with a crazy 6.6-liter Duramax LMM V8 diesel.

The engine isn’t stock, either. Hausmann’s Diesel Performance rebuilt it from the ground up to achieve 643 PS (634 hp / 473 kW) and 1,487 Nm (1,097 lb-ft) at the crank. Harnessing all that torque necessitated a ZF six-speed manual transmission with a Stage 3 cryo-hardened clutch from South Bend.

As impressive as the internals of the Hellair are, the looks don’t lag too far behind. It’s a glorious retro car in black with a crimson red leather interior and a clean modern aesthetic – no badges or purely decorative trims anywhere you look. The interior is blissfully modern with an HVAC, a 12-channel JL Audio system rocking a large subwoofer, and a shiny Billet Specialties steering wheel.

Mecum Auctions will try to sell this truly unique creation on March 18–22, so mark the date on your calendar if interested. There are no price estimations right now.
