As you may have heard, EU was considering banning all carbon-fiber reinforced plastics in new vehicles from 2029; not anymore, it seems.
The latest edition of the End of Life Vehicles Directive (ELV), recently drafted up by the EU, highlighted carbon fiber as a hazardous material for the first time on record. It proceeded to point out its numerous downsides like poor repairability and limited recycling options. Recycling CFP results in it dissolving into individual carbon strands and resin smoke, which can be highly toxic for humans.
If the new law had been adopted, automakers in Europe would have been banned from using this lightweight and durable material in their vehicles starting in 2029. However, a representative of the European Parliament came forth with an important heads-up yesterday, telling Motor1 that work was underway to exclude CFP both from the list of hazardous materials and from the directive.
