General Motors recalls half a million cars

General Motors has announced a large-scale recall campaign for the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban models with three seat rows. Motor1 reports that a fault was discovered in the rear-row safety belt lock.

Allegedly, the supplier violated technical requirements during the production of the belt clasp unit, resulting in an unsecure fastening that may break loose and cause injury during an incident. Unofficial sources point to Mexico-based ZF Occupant Safety Systems being the culprit.

In late spring, one of the regional dealerships first signaled about the issue one of their customers encountered in their Chevrolet Suburban. GM began an investigation into the matter and quickly came up with seven apparently related cases. In the end, a recall campaign was announced for 484,155 vehicles produced since October 19, 2019 until May 27, 2022.

The automaker stresses that only 2 percent of vehicles are actually affected, and not using third-row seats can keep you safe. Still, a visit to your local dealership is highly recommended for a quick examination of the belt clasp mechanism and possible complete replacement.
