As far back as 2019, Mazda representatives said the company was looking into electrifying its iconic MX-5 / Miata coupe and roadster. It’s now been confirmed that the model will run electric in its next generation planned for 2028 – but you’ll still be able to grab a version with a traditional engine.
The story comes from Auto Motor und Sport quoting Mazda Motor CEO Masahiro Moro. Speaking in the interview, he said the next generation of the MX-5 was being developed on a new platform designed to accommodate both ICE and EV powertrains. The main goal was to make it as lightweight as possible without resorting to overly expensive materials like carbon fiber. Moro said the engineers were targeting a weight between 1–1.2 metric tons (2,204–2,645 lbs) for the chassis and bodywork. Adding a battery would make it heavier, but not critically so.
Nothing has been revealed with regard to the powertrains. Rumors say that the ICE variant of the new Mazda MX-5 will use a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-Z four-pot rated at 203 PS (200 hp / 148 kW) or so without any turbos. It might end up electrified to an extent. The all-electric version is almost guaranteed to pack more power and torque, but all details remain to be announced.
Aside from the next MX-5 generation, the automaker apparently has plans for an exclusive high-end sports car. This one remains shrouded in complete mystery. All we know is that it is supposed to become “an ideal reflection of the brand’s values” and one of the most desirable (read: expensive) Mazda cars of the decade.
