Elusive Widebody AMG 3.4 Coupe goes for $0.25M

Bring a Trailer has just found a new owner for a two-door Mercedes-Benz 300 CE-24 modified by AMG back when that name still belonged to an independent tuning company and not a division of Mercedes. Despite its considerable 134,000 kilometers (83,000+ miles) of use, it went for jaw-dropping $251,000.

According to reports, AMG only built around 25 such Widebody 3.4 Coupes in the late 1980s. Each one ended up with a stylish widebody kit partly inspired by the legendary AMG Hammer, a luxurious leather interior with Recaro Classic seats, and some of the best equipment that era had to offer.

Power was still supplied by the car’s M104 inline-six block, but the tuner bored and stroked it from the original 3.0 to 3.4 liters. This led to the power rising from 220 PS (217 hp / 162 kW) to 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW).

Before the sale, this example underwent comprehensive engine-out maintenance. The transmission was repaired and serviced, and a new set of tires made it onto the wheel rims. Importantly enough, the former owner made sure not to spoil AMG’s original design formula with modern aftermarket equipment.

As impressive as the final amount looks, the early AMG works sometimes go for even more. For example, an AMG Hammer equipped with a 6.0-liter V8 fetched $885,000 in 2023.
