Pentagon blacklists battery vendor CATL

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced its intention to blacklist Chinese traction battery manufacturer CATL over alleged ties with the country’s military.

It is illegal for a company closely associated with a foreign military force to strike deals with the Department of Defense or any of its subcontractors. This definition actually includes many automakers, complicating their operation in North America. For example, Ford had intended to build a joint factory for battery production with CATL in the United States, with investment estimated at $3.5 billion. These and other plans now run the risk of never coming to life.

While the final decision remains to be reached regarding the company’s affiliation with the Chinese military, its shares have already dropped by 2.8%.
