Check out a G-Class transformed into a $1.3M luxury convertible

The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 has spawned a convertible version, but the original manufacturer had nothing to do with it. According to CarBuzz, 20 such cars were made in Germany for Refined Marques, a major dealership specializing in exotic and luxury vehicles. The starting price is a cool €1.2 million, or $1.32 million.

The off-roader wound up with a full-fledged automatic soft top driven by servomotors, much like Mercedes’ own designs. The c-pillars have been pushed further to the front end and custom rear doors have been installed. The classic G-Class convertibles only had two doors, making this design look rather unique in comparison. That said, the new doors are fairly small and back-hinged.

Another improvement over the production SUV comes in the form of added second row legroom. Mercedes has never produced a G-Class AMG convertible throughout its history, so the buyers had to make do with tamer base trims (like the one in the video).

The tuning company that carried out the project says it took a team of engineers formerly specializing in supercar and F1 racecar production a year and a half to make. The 4.0-liter V8 under the hood stayed stock, but that’s hardly a bad thing considering that it already makes 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque.

CarBuzz says each example will be individualized with a unique exterior finish and interior trim. Out of the 20 units planned for production, 17 have already been reserved.

The luxurious topless SUV is shaping up to become the most expensive new Mercedes-AMG G 63 on the market.
