Toyota bringing 2 topless off-roaders to SEMA

The Japanese automobile giant will attend the SEMA show starting this week with a pair of rather unusual off-roaders with removable roofs. Both are unique concepts and not meant for production.

Starting with the Land Cruiser ROX, it is a creation of the Toyota Calty Design research center. While based on a production SUV with its fixed-top body, it lacks c-pillars and features a sawn-off top. A welded frame helps compensate for the lost rigidity, and the roof is now a cloth tent that you can easily remove when not needed.

On the outside, the Land Cruiser looks like a true expedition SUV with robust bumpers, a side-hinged tailgate with a spare wheel holder, and off-road tires. It also has a winch handy, seven roof-mounted floodlights and gas cans secured with the help of dedicated holders inside the trunk.

The 4Runner TRD Surf is a work by Motorsports Garage. Despite being based on the latest model year, it is heavily inspired by the Hilux Surf model from the 1980s. In addition to missing its top and c-pillars, the truck has no b-pillars, either. It wears a removable hardtop and has a surfboard rack that stays there regardless of whether the top is on. The rear doors are welded shut, so those sitting in the back row have to fold down one of the front seats to access it. A 3D topographical map adorns the hood.
