Stellantis to shut down Vauxhall plant in UK

The beleaguered American car company hopes that closing its factory in Luton, England and firing the entire staff of 1,100 workers will help it stay afloat longer.

The industrial site traces its history all the way back to year 1905, when it was founded by automaker Vauxhall. Stellantis had big plans for it, most notably wanting to upgrade the facilities to produce fully electric vans and minibuses under its various brands. This large-scale upgrade was planned for the spring of 2025. Of course, it is out of the question now.

With the Vauxhall location set to cease operation soon, Stellantis has moved its light commercial EV production plans to its Ellesmere Port factory. That one is already busy assembling electric microvans, so it should be good for the low EV demand we are seeing these days.

The company is offering a relocation to all Vauxhall site employees willing to keep their jobs.
