Toyota Camry morphs into a 7-cylinder racing monster

In time for this year’s Super Taikyu 24-hour endurance marathon, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division has prepared a 700-horsepower Camry powered by not one, but two engines.

A 1.6-liter turbocharged three-pot under the hood sends around 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) to the front axle, GR claims. The same mill powers the latest GR Corolla and GR Yaris, by the way.

In turn, a 2.0-liter G20E four-cylinder unit occupies the place of the rear bench seat, sending 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) to the rear end. It is a promising engine model that’s still in development, so you won’t find it on any Toyota currently produced.

At the same time, the company brought another show car to the event, one finished in black and looking even more extreme thanks to some over-the-top aero. As wild as it looks on the outside, the second Camry is at its wildest inside the cabin, where it flaunts artificial fur and Alcantara trim alongside a gear shifter encrusted with crystal glass. To max out on the bizarre, GR affixed an actual household lighting fixture to the headliner.

On the off-chance that you wanted to drive one of these, Toyota has confirmed that, unfortunately, no production plans existed for either car.
