VW Golf GTI smashes through a record ahead of reveal

Volkswagen has yet to unveil its Golf GTI Edition 50 on Friday, June 20, and it won’t go on sale until 2026 anyway, but the car has already set a cool record on the North Loop.

The hatchback needed only 7 minutes 46.13 seconds to lap up all 20.8 kilometers of the Nürburgring – faster than the AWD Golf R model that managed 7 minutes 47.31 seconds back in 2022. As of this week, the anniversary-themed Golf GTI is officially recognized as Volkswagen’s fastest production car on the Green Hell track.

We suppose that the German automaker had its sights set on another record as well: dethroning the Honda Civic Type R in the FWD Production Car category. However, the Japanese hot hatch stayed ahead with the lap time of 7 minutes 44.88 seconds that it set a few years ago.
