Novelties
Volkswagen has released specs and base pricing for the upcoming mid-generational refresh of its e-up! compact BEV.
The main improvement concerns the traction battery, which now measures at 32.3 kWh, rather than 18.7 kWh. This is still marginally less than what the latest e-Beetle and its siblings, the Seat Mii electric and the Skoda Citigo e Iv, offer (36.8 kWh), but a major improvement nonetheless. The engine power went up 1 kW and now amounts to 61 kW (83 hp). The torque remains undisclosed (the Mii has 212 Nm / 156 lb-ft, while the Citigo has 210 Nm / 155 lb-ft). Sprinting 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) now takes 11.9 seconds instead of 12.4 (Citigo: 12.5 s). The top speed is capped at 130 km/h (81 mph).
Charging the battery from empty to 80% full takes one hour at a 40 kW station, and you can control the process using your smartphone. The previous-gen Volkswagen e-up! (see gallery and video) had between 120 and 160 kilometers (75-100 miles) of range; the new one promises as much as 260 km (162 miles).
One last pleasant surprise arrives in the form of the starting price. Whereas the pre-facelift e-up! cost €23,570 in its most basic version, the new one can be yours for just €21,975 (€17,595 with the subsidies included).
