Volvo announces ES90, its next large electric sedan

The Volvo ES90 is coming in March 2024 to provide a greener alternative to the company’s S90 flagship.

The first video teaser previews a car that looks like the S90 from the side, but with a revised roofline, a wider c-pillar and an integrated trunk spoiler.

There are still no technical specifications, but it would make sense for the ES90 to be based on the same platform as the EX90 crossover. The latter supports multiple electric powertrains rated up to 520 PS (513 hp / 382 kW) and comes equipped with a large 111-kWh battery pack.

In terms of dimensions, the electric saloon is speculated to be 5 meters (195 inches) long with 3.1 meters (121 inches) between the axles – in other words, slightly shorter than the S90 but with a longer wheelbase.

According to Volvo, its EV sales have actually been on the rise recently. The company managed to move 47% more EVs in August this year than the same month last year and 52% more in Europe in particular. Even in China where the automaker took a roughly 25-percent popularity hit, it managed to sell 10% more EVs and hybrids than in 2023.
