Volkswagen unleashes a trio of concepts in Shanghai

Volkswagen has prepared three electrified vehicles to show us what its new EVs will look like over the next three years or so. Designed at the VW HQ in Hefei, China, they will be produced with the help of FAW, SAIC and Anhui joint enterprises for that market.

Starting with the ID. ERA, it’s a full-size crossover SUV with a laconic exterior design and three seats in the cabin. A hybrid powertrain gives it up to 300 km (186 miles) of all-electric range or more than 1,000 km (621 miles) if you fire up the engine as a generator.

The ID. EVO is also a full-size SUV, but one that’s fully electric and running on 800V internals to support ultra-fast charging.

Rounding off the show lineup is the ID. AURA, the company’s first sedan to take advantage of the latest CMP vehicle platform for China. It comes with a large multimedia display and an AI-powered virtual assistant that can easily access a variety of in-car functions.

Volkswagen says that some production cars based on these prototypes will be certified for Level 2++ self-driving, meaning they will be able to change lanes and overtake other cars when necessary. Drivers will also be able to take their hands off the steering wheel, but only briefly and only in select scenarios.
