Cadillac’s Opulent Velocity is close to perfection, too bad it’s a concept

Cadillac has unveiled a new hypercar concept called “Opulent Velocity”. It packs an all-electric drivetrain, two rows of two seats in each and modern autopilot tech, but the traditional controls are still there.

Starting on the exterior side of things, the car boasts bold headlights with a corrugated-glass look. The wheel wells are backlit, the giant doors swing up like a butterfly’s wings, and the steering wheel is a rectangular yoke with a built-in display. The front row is represented by nice-looking bucket seats, while the rear bench looks rather modest in comparison.

Cadillac envisions this car with Level 4 semi-autonomous driving technology on board. The steering wheel and the pedals are retractable – you can use a provided controller device to switch to self-driving mode and back.

Racing enthusiasts will know to appreciate Ghost Mode, a feature that lets you compete against yourself on looped raceways.

The underpinning platform is GM Ultium. Cadillac doesn’t say anything about the production prospects of the Opulent Velocity, but it has plans to produce at least some next-gen V-Series and Blackwing vehicles on the Ultium chassis.
