Car Tuning

Electrification made this Mazda MX-5 a sportier ride

The EV swap gurus over at Electrogenic have designed a tuning kit for turning the first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata into an electric car. The numbers aren’t too big, but most importantly, the petite roadster stays lightweight.

The package includes just one electric motor rated at 163 PS (160 hp / 120 kW). It lets the MX-5 accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in six seconds flat – that’s roughly three seconds faster than stock. The top speed is decent enough at 185 km/h (mph). Still, the biggest improvement arguably happens in the torque department – instead of its usual 100 Nm (74 lb-ft), the MX-5 gets 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) straight from launch.

It helps that the whole upgrade weighs as little as 100 kilos (220 pounds), bringing the total car weight up to 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs). Once fully charged, the included battery gives you 240 km (150 miles) of range – enough for most summer trips, we suppose. And if it’s not, the battery only takes an hour to recharge.

The price is pending.
