Volkswagen and Xpeng to develop China’s EV charging network

The two automakers are joining efforts on constructing a network of particularly fast charging stations in China, Reuters reports.

A cooperation agreement recently signed between Volkswagen and Xpeng envisions making their existing proprietary chargers mutually compatible, allowing VW drivers to top up their batteries at Xpeng outlets and vice versa. This decision concerns over 20,000 charging points in 420 towns and cities of China.

Once done, the companies will unite forces to build ultrafast chargers all around the country. These will sport joint branding.

VW and Xpeng first announced their cooperation plans in 2023. The German corporation acquired a 5% share in the Chinese startup for $700,000,000. In November 2024, it was revealed that future Volkswagen EVs would be manufactured on a platform designed in China.
