Car Tuning
As we learned last month, not even the mighty McLaren 765LT can hold its own against the all-electric, triple-motor Tesla Model S Plaid on the drag strip. But the today’s contender is no stock car: it is a 720S with serious performance mods. How will it fare?
The British performance coupe wears a non-OEM body kit and gets around 1,000 horsepower (750 kilowatts) out of its four-liter twin-turbo V8 thanks to extensive aftermarket upgrades. The Tesla still has a bit of an edge here with its 1,020 PS (1,006 hp / 750 kW), but weighs considerably more as well.
The first race is the least surprising of all: instant torque lets the Model S Plaid pull ahead from the standing start and never lose its advantage. A rolling start sees a tighter competition develop, but the McLaren once again drops the ball. In the third and final start, which also starts with both cars already in motion, three rather large passengers weigh the Tesla down for an added challenge. The two cars cross the finish line almost simultaneously, but once again, with the EV slightly in the lead.
