Chery showcases an airbag to prevent rear-ending fatalities

The Chery Fulwin T11 is the Chinese automaker’s first crossover to feature a special curtain-type airbag deployed between the rear seats and the trunk. According to the company, rear-end collisions are to blame for 34% of all passenger deaths in the country.

During an incident, the curtain immediately expands behind the headrests to protect the seat occupants from hitting bodywork with their heads. According to Chery, this enabled it to drop the neck injury criterion measured during conventional crash tests from 27 points to just 14. The international standards hold that anything above 15 NIC often entails major injuries.

The Fulwin T11 comes in at 5,171 mm (202 inches) long, 1,986 mm (77.6 inches) wide and 1,801 mm (70.4 inches) tall. It has 3.1 meters (121.1 inches) between the axles and packs a hybrid powertrain with a 1.5-liter turbo engine and two e-motors. The power and torque remain to be announced.

What we already know is that there will be two LFP battery packs to choose form. The smaller 33.7-kWh pack will deliver 170 km (105 miles) of all-electric range, manufacturer-rated, and the bigger one will reportedly be good for 180 km (112 miles). Max out the gas tank, and you’ll be looking at 1,400 km (870 miles) of range or so.
