Toyota’s latest Corolla concept envisions something different for 2027

Toyota has come to the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo with a car it called simply the Corolla Concept. As you may have noticed, it has nothing in common with the current Corolla, but could it be the next generation? We might have to wait until closer to 2027 for a definitive answer.

In the meantime, the company doesn’t explain how this futuristic prototype relates to its current product portfolio. It cuts a sporty and angular profile with novel bumpers and slim LED light stripes all around the large vertical headlights. On the whole, the car resembles the automaker’s bZ-series electric vehicles, but it also leans heavily into the Lexus concept territory.

Unexpectedly enough, the interior actually looks more grounded than the exterior. The front seats look almost normal, the same goes for the rear bench, and even the steering wheel doesn’t deviate from its classic round shape. At the same time, the center console looks downright outlandish with multiple small screens surrounding it, largely haptic buttons and a transmission selector shaped like a tiny car.

Toyota doesn’t reveal any powertrain details, but the exterior renderings suggest that the Corolla Concept has as many as three ports for fuel and charging. We suppose it could be a serial hybrid, although this is still pure conjecture. Toyota stays committed to producing all-electric vehicles side-by-side with the more traditional hybrids and even non-electrified ICE cars, so we expect new generations of ICE engines from the company in the future, one of which powering the next-gen Corolla.

As we said above, this new generation is expected to arrive in late 2026 or perhaps early 2027, but the specific launch timeframe hasn’t been announced yet.
