3rd-gen Honda Civic gets remodeled into a mid-engined sports car

We have seen so many downright crazy tuning projects over the years, it is tempting to think nothing whatsoever can truly surprise us anymore. Thank heavens for projects like this one that prove us wrong time and again! Enter the magnificent Honda Civic Mk3, rebuilt by hot rod specialist Andy Barcheck into a mid-engined, RWD track tool.

When he bought the regular Civic around three and a half decades ago, Barcheck immediately did an engine swap. The hatchback ended up with a 2.5-liter Acura V6 engine located in its middle, as well as a new radiator grille and brakes sourced from a Chevy Corvette. In order to accommodate the larger engine properly, he had to cut into the bottom of the car and subsequently reinforce the body with the addition of a tubular space-frame. He also had to move the fuel tank to the front.

Barcheck proceeded to win multiple awards in various races using his Honda Civic. After several years, though, he felt the need to move on and sold it.

Ten years ago, having changed ownership several times, the car found its current owner. He restored it to peak condition and even swapped the old engine out for the even more capable 3.2-liter Acura CL Type-S V6. Andy Barcheck approved of this decision, saying he had always wanted to make a similar upgrade.
