Vanguard Motor Sales is offering a fully restored and somewhat modernized Jeep CJ-5 Renegade in the United States, claiming that it only has around 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) on the odometer since restoration. It’s still a 48-year-old car, so you should do your own research before deciding whether it’s worth the asking price of $80,000.
Working on this particular CJ-5, the restorer swapped out its engine for a 5.9-liter AMC V8. The listing highlights new shafts, intake and exhaust, fuel pump, ignition and cooling. Still, the block is apparently about as old as the Jeep itself. A quick search reveals that it debuted in 1970 with around 294 PS (290 hp / 216 kW) in top spec.
A three-speed manual transmission routes the momentum to the four wheels via a transfer case and a cardan shaft sourced from more recent off-roaders. Pro Comp shock absorbers and an improved sway bar should help with driving on terrain, and the same goes for the 102 mm (4 inches) or so of added ground clearance. The wheels and tires are likewise new, and there is a reinforced bumper with a winch at the front end.
The interior looks mostly intact except for two added leather seats.
