Mitsubishi L200/Triton gets smart in Australia with a lower weight rating

The Australian branch of Mitsubishi is offering a new free option for its L200/Triton pickup. Two of the available trims can be optioned with a smaller weight capacity to qualify for local leasing benefits.

Tax benefits in Australia apply to vehicles rated under a metric ton (2,205 lbs) of cargo capacity. Unlike the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux, which circumvented these limitations a long time ago, the Triton had never been eligible for the deduction, being officially rated at either 1,030 or 1,110 kilos depending on the version.

The new option lets customers Down Under order a Triton that’s officially rated below one ton, saving money on the lease. Toyota doesn’t specify whether it actually made any design modifications to the truck or just corrected the papers to work around the law. What we do know is that the company did so after receiving numerous requests from dealerships and customers wanting a more attractively priced offer.

The prices stay exactly the same at 59,090 and 63,840 AUD (roughly 39,000 and 42,000 USD). The local version of the truck utilizes a 2.4-liter turbo diesel with 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW), which a six-speed automatic transmission carries to the rear axle or both.
