Porsche has stopped taking orders for 718-series vehicles. There is still no official production end date, but those looking to buy a non-electrified Boxster or a Cayman will now have to search for leftover stock.
Initially, Porsche had announced that it wanted to keep the gas-powered coupe and roadster in the lineup, selling them side-by-side with an all-electric next generation. It then decided to ditch that plan. The battery cars are already in development, but they won’t arrive until 2026, or possibly later. The automaker blames battery supply shortages and software challenges for the delays.
Both EVs will be based on a Volkswagen platform developed specifically for electric cars. It seems that their sizes will remain on par with their ICE predecessors. Porsche also promises to fine-tune the handling so that both feel like full-fledged German sports cars on the road.
