Potential Toyota MR2 successor spotted testing

Carscoops believes that these photos snapped at the Fuji Raceway in Japan depict a mid-engined, all-wheel-drive sports car most likely to debut under the revived MR2 badge.

Toyota hasn’t announced anything like it yet, and the prototype seen in the two photos here looks drastically different from most of the automaker’s current models. The generously flared rear fenders complete with air intakes prompt the assumption that the engine sits just in front of the rear axle. Composite windows all around, a robust-looking tubular roll cage and a large rear wing indicate that this particular example was built with track days in mind.

Since Toyota had previously mentioned developing an innovative 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, we suppose it could be powering the prototype seen here. There’s also a theory that Toyota may want to release the car under a name other than MR2 – potential candidates include “Celica” and even “Supra”. It’d be intriguing to see the Supra succeeded by a mid-engine coupe like this.

Still, the tests have apparently only begun now, meaning several months will likely have to pass before we learn any new details.
