Piloted by Scott Speed, the extensively modified Subaru WRX “Project Midnight” has managed to complete the Paul Giblin Memorial Climb to the Clouds in 5 minutes, 11 seconds, and 982 milliseconds, slashing the previous world record by 16 seconds.
The previous record holder was none other than Travis Pastrana, who climbed to the pinnacle of Mt. Washington in 5 minutes 28 seconds 670 milliseconds. However, it’s worth pointing out that he did so piloting a tuned WRX STI with lofty 862 PS (850 hp / 634 kW) at its disposal.
In contrast, the Project Midnight seen here makes do with “just” 680 PS (670 hp / 500 kW). Instead of abusing raw power, it relies on its war-machine-like aero and carbon-fiber bodywork to achieve superior results. It helps that it weighs only 1,120 kilos (2,470 pounds) with all liquids already in.
