Mahindra’s new cheap truck threatens to eat Toyota Hilux’s lunch

Mahindra Automotive has launched the Scorpio Lifestyler, a mid-sized body-on-frame pickup truck so far only available on its domestic market of India, but also scheduled for launch in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East, and South America.

Coming in at 5.3 meters (208.7 inches) long with 3.11 meters (122.4 inches) of wheelbase, the Lifestyler is similar in size to the Toyota Hilux. At the same time, is starts at 1.98 million Indian rupees, or 20,700 USD, undercutting the Hilux by around 60%. That’s a major consideration for buyers in developing countries.

Technically, the Lifestyler shares its platform and ladder frame with the already available Scorpio-N SUV. It also has similar-looking LED lights all around and some similar cabin styling cues. Mahindra plans to offer it with a five-seat double cab at first, but a two-seat single cab variant is not out of the question somewhere down the line.

Based on the photos, the interior features a fairly large vertical infotainment display, a rather small digital dash panel and a mildly squared-off steering wheel. The trim seems to consist of eco-leather with contrast stitching and some faux-aluminum accents.

All powertrain specs remain to be revealed. Autocar India (see the video above) supposes that the Lifestyler will go on sale with a choice between a petrol and a diesel engine, manual and automatic transmission, and RWD/AWD. The version for India is unlikely to get hybridized at any point.
