Bugatti W16 Mistral hits world record

The hypercar is now officially recognized as the world’s fastest open-top production car.

Racing on the Papenburg track in Germany, Bugatti’s test driver Andy Wallace managed to accelerate the Mistral to a dizzying 453.91 kilometers per hour (282 miles per hour). That’s a good deal more than the factory-rated top speed of 420 km/h (261 mph).

True to its name, the Bugatti W16 Mistral packs the company’s now-retired W16 engine quad-turbocharged to 1,600 PS (1,578 hp / 1,177 kW) and 1,600 Nm (1,180 lb-ft) of torque.

The previous speed record in the roofless production car category was set by the U.S.-made Hennessey Venom GT Spyder. It achieved 427.4 km/h (265.6 mph) eight years ago and has only been bested now.
