Opel Frontera cosplays an expedition SUV

Opel has transformed its Frontera crossover into a design study called the Gravel. It’s already official that it won’t become a production car.

Designed between the Opel design center in Rüsselsheim, aftermarket companies BlackFish and XS and some brand fans, the fancy soft-roader makes its public debut at the XS Carnight Worthersee event in Austria today, May 30.

That’s your best chance to see a car as tame as the Frontera equipped with a Thule Canyon expedition rack, a pair of LED light bars and BFGoodrich tires wrapped around 16-inch Borbet wheels. There’s also a winch, brush guards, a couple of luggage boxes and wheel chains.

Admittedly, the SUV looks striking in a combination of matte black and beige with vivid orange accents. It wears decals from all the brands involved in the project and has an exterior-matching cabin, although you’ll have to take Opel’s word for it – there are no photos.

Despite its rugged charms, the Frontera Gravel remains stock under the hood. As such, it packs a single electric motor rated at 156 PS (154 hp / 115 kW) and a 54-kWh battery pack sufficient for 400 km (248 miles) or so.
