MG-branded electric cars coming to Germany

China-based SAIC Group had already tried conquering Europe when it introduced a few cars under its MG sub-brand in Great Britain, and now, two more models are underway to Germany.

The MG Marvel R is positioned as a middle-class SUV with a body spanning 4,674 mm (15.33 feet). It debuted in China as the Roewe Marvel R in February, but the Roewe brand is domestic-only.

Powering the drive are one motor mounted at the front end and two mounted in the back, joining efforts for 288 PS (284 hp / 212 kW) and 665 Nm (490 lb-ft) of torque. The sprint time is quite good at 4.9 seconds, and the top speed lies at 200 km/h (124 mph). A lower RWD spec with two motors is scheduled to arrive later.

The car’s 70-kWh battery grants it up to 400 kilometers (248 miles) of WLTP-rated range, and charging from zero to 80% only takes half an hour.

The frunk can take up to 150 liters’ worth of luggage, and the rear trunk is larger at 357 liters. The cabin for five people has a 12.3-inch digital dash and a 19.4-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen.

The other model is a facelifted MG 5 Electric wagon, which we know little about except for its exterior shots. It is 4,544 mm (14.91 feet) long and sports a new front fascia with narrower headlights and no fake grille. Trunk capacity varies from 578 to 1,456 liters.

The front motor of the MG 5 Electric now churns out 184 PS (181 hp / 135 kW) instead of the former 156 PS (154 hp / 115 kW) and covers a WLTP-rated 400 kilometers (248 miles) before it runs out of charge. This likely means that its battery is now larger than the former 52.5 kWh. The initial sprint lasts 8.3 seconds.

Pre-orders for the MG Marvel R in Germany will start in late spring. The MG 5 Electric will join the list in summer, and showroom sales should start in the fall.
