2024 Toyota Tacoma touches down with numerous improvements

Toyota has ushered in the next generation of its Tacoma truck, which will reach the showrooms in the USA closer towards the end of the year.

In its most basic version, the truck uses a 2.4-liter turbo engine that drives the rear wheels with 231 PS (228 hp / 170 kW) and 329 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque through an eight-speed A/T and a self-locking differential. Higher specs offer a boosted version of this engine and the option to go six-speed manual. The three-pedal truck makes 270 PS (266 hp / 199 kW), while the two-pedal version is slightly ahead with 282 PS (278 hp / 207 kW) and 429 Nm (316 lb-ft).

At the top of the range is a hybrid i-Pro Max modification that combines a 2.4-liter engine with an electric motor built straight into the automatic transmission and a small 1.9-kWh battery. The resulting mild-hybrid setup delivers up to 331 PS (326 hp / 243 kW) and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque.

It seems likely that the on-demand AWD version of the Tacoma with its two-speed transfer case and LSD may become the best-seller for its obvious advantages. Even so, the company delivers the flagship spec exclusively with a permanent AWD system and an interaxle lock.

Those into off-roading should also check out the modifications called Trailhunter and TRD Pro, both of which are hybrid. Those will not become available until the next spring, though.
