Porsche celebrates 50 years of the 911 Turbo with a tartan special

The world’s first Porsche 930 Turbo bowed at the Paris International Motor Show half a century ago, and now the company is commemorating it with a (mildly) limited edition of the 911 Turbo S.

It is called the 50 Years Edition and is coming to us in a production run capped at 1,974 units. Every car gets body decals inspired by the RSR Turbo Concept that hit the spotlight in the year 1973, as well as badges saying “Turbo 50”. The interior gets seats and doors with tartan fabric inserts similar to those of the first 930 models produced. Numerous Turbo-exclusive Turbonite color accents round off the styling.

Those who would like a more comprehensive stylistic makeover may pay extra for a package called Heritage Design. It comes with starting numbers on the sides, Porsche’s old logo on the steering wheel and the hood, and even more tartan upholstery all around.

Things stay stock under the hood. In the case of the 911 Turbo S (see video), this implies a 3.8-liter flat engine rated at 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The adaptive suspension sits 10 mm (0.4”) lower than stock and the brakes are carbon-ceramic from the get-go. Despite the lack of tech upgrades, the nostalgic 911 Turbo starts a cool $29,700 above the stock model’s $263,095 in the United States.
