Car Tuning

Improvised BMW M3 (F80) wagon sells for $72k

BMW took its sweet time launching the much-requested M3 Touring, and when it did, it left out the United States. An enthusiast from Michigan grew tired of it and decided to make a replica instead.

Dixon Motorsports, who worked on rebuilding the car, started with a BMW 328i xDrive sedan that had an accident in 2022 and was deemed a complete write-off. Nevertheless, the tuner managed to bring it back to the road, powered by a superior engine borrowed from a real F80 M3. The same model donated its electronics and wiring, six-speed manual gearbox, exhaust system and LSD to the project.

The resulting output isn’t specified, but we would imagine it being close to the original 437 PS (431 hp / 321 kW). Strangely enough, the car no longer has its xDrive AWD – all torque goes to the rear axle alone, according to the listing.

The body panels were also partly borrowed from the M3 saloon and partly jury-rigged from aftermarket components. A peek inside the cabin reveals Merino leather-wrapped heated seats, new steering wheel, dashboard and center console, and sporty carbon-fiber accents all around.

Despite its 108,000 km (roughly 67,500 miles) of post-rebuild mileage, the car went on sale earlier this week and found a buyer who handed over $72,000 for it.
