UK ponders changing EV quotas to please everyone

Jonathan Reynolds, British Secretary of State for Business and Trade, told the media that his office was looking for ways to slash the unrealistically high electric vehicle production quotas.

According to the electrification strategy currently adopted by the government, 22% of all light passenger cars made in the UK must be fully electric. This share is supposed to to grow to 28% in 2025 and reach 80% by the beginning of the next decade. All automakers failing to meet this quota are obligated to pay a hefty fine of £15,000 for every non-electric vehicle produced.

However, with British drivers being not that eager to adopt EVs, the whole market is teetering at the brink of collapse. Being unable to sell enough battery cars, companies end up downsizing their ICE car production accordingly to avoid fines.

A temporary solution is now in the works that should remedy the situation, Reynolds said in a recent interview. He added that the automakers’ needs and priorities would be taken into serious consideration.
