2 EVs share the European Car of the Year award

The jury of the annual European Car of the Year competition has awarded the grand prize to the compact-sized Renault 5 E-Tech and its technological twin, the Alpine A290.

Both electric hatchbacks run on the same chassis, but different trim options and features make them feel different. In this year’s contest, they won gold with a score of 353 points. The silver award went to the Kia EV3 with 291 points, while the Citroen C3 landed a bronze medal with 215 points.

The rest of the short list included Dacia Duster, Hyundai Inster, Cupra Terramar, Alfa Romeo Junior. As you may have noticed, these are all either electric by design or have an EV powertrain listed as available.

Renault Sonic won the ECotY top prize in 2024. This is actually only the second time on record that the same manufacturer wins for two years in a row. Fiat was the first one with its Punto and Bravo/Brava models in 1995 and 1996, respectively.
