The Red Bull RB17 is a 15,000-RPM monster

At last, the Red Bull Racing team has properly unveiled its first market-bound hypercar.  Designed by famous engineer Adrian Newey, the RB17 is not street-legal, but available for private clients to buy. Or rather, it was: all 50 production units had been pre-sold ahead of the reveal.

From the design standpoint, the RB17 is about as extreme as they get, rocking a nearly all-carbon body and an engine integrated into the monocoque frame, even serving as one of the load-bearing components. Weighing in at 900 kilograms (under 2,000 pounds), it produces up to 1,700 kg (3,750 lbs) of downforce depending on the settings of the active aero kit.

The suspension is of a pushrod design and supports height adjustment. Carbon-ceramic brakes and 18-inch carbon-fiber wheels shod in Michelin tires are listed as standard. Paying a premium can get you 20-inch wheels with more versatile tires. The interior seats two people, and that’s about it.

Power for the hypercar comes from a hybrid system dominated by a 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V10. The mill can rev up to 15,000 RPM and hits the crank with 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 746 kW). Another 203 PS (200 hp / 149 kW) is supplied by an electric motor. The transmission is six-speed sequential and lacks a reverse gear, so all reversing is handled by the electric motor. At its peak output, the Red Bull RB17 can exceed 350 km/h (217 mph).
