This Chevy Caprice “Nomad’r What” is part stylish, part gaudy, all custom

This Chevrolet Caprice wagon from the 1990s was fairly nondescript until famous American designer George Barris had his way with it.

Barris, best known for his original Batmobile design dating back to 1966, drew inspiration from the Chevrolet Nomad of the same era. He completely reimagined the rear end, removing the side windows and adding fin-like attachments integrated with exhaust pipes at both sides. Old-fashioned taillights, a chrome front bumper and a retro paint job rounded off the look.

If you think the exterior looks over-the-top, wait until you see what’s inside. The entire cabin is trimmed with black and golden velvet, which can be cozy or gaudy depending on your tastes. There are only four seats, but the front ones can swivel and the trunk is as spacious as you’ll ever need.

Powering the attention-grabbing ride is its stock 5.0-liter V8 good for 172 PS (170 hp / 127 kW) and 346 Nm (255 lb-ft).

Mecum will attempt to find a new owner for the car at an Indy auction on May 15.
