VW discontinues the VR6 for good

The production of VR6-series engines ended permanently on December 12, Volkswagen says.

The offset-cylinder engine featuring a small 15-degree camber angle between its six cylinders debuted 33 years ago in a Golf hatchback. Its first implementation had 2.8 liters of usable displacement. Variants ranging from 2.5 to 3.6 liters emerged later on, the smallest one shipping as a turbo.

Various VR6 engines powered all kinds of Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Seat, and Skoda vehicles. One made it into the Ford Galaxy minivan, and Mercedes-Benz used these engines for its Viano and Vito MPV lineups. A total of 1.87 million units have been made in total.
