JAC Jiayue A5 liftback debuts in China with style

Two years ago, Volkswagen and JAC founded a joint enterprise to produce electric cars for China. Their first EV is already available under the SOL badge. However, the JAC Jiayue A5 liftback revealed a couple days ago unexpectedly turned out to be gas-powered, with the electric version scheduled only for 2021.

At least it looks good, something that we should thank Daniele Gaglione for. The famous industrial designer left Alfa Romeo for JAC in 2010 and currently heads the JAC Design Center in Turin, Italy.

The vehicle measures 4,772 mm (15.66 ft.) long, 1,820 mm (5.97 ft.) wide and 1,492 mm (4.9 ft.) tall with 2,760 mm (9.06 ft.) of wheelbase. The rear suspension is independent, which is quite unusual for China, where much larger cars generally make do with the solid-beam rear axle.

A 1.5-liter turbocharged V4 occupies the engine bay, sending up to 150 hp (112 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) to the wheels through either a manual transmission or a CVT.

Inside, there is a 7” digital dash and a vertical 10.4” multimedia display that also doubles as the climate control interface.

The standard trim is fairly generous, encompassing six airbags, all-around view cameras, electric front seats, and a panoramic roof. Options include contour ambient lighting (64 selectable colors) and extended leather finish.

Domestic sales of the new JAC Jiayue A5 will start in November.
